The antagonist in this film is also a female.

 The aliens are just drones; they are at the service of The Queen, the true main villain. Therein lies the drama. Ripley is trying to protect the humans. The Queen is trying to reproduce and protect the aliens. They are both women following self-preservation and maternal instincts. This is a showdown between two women who are basically fighting for the survival of their own species on the planet. 

The final battle between Ripley and the Queen is epic! Two powerful women in a fight to the death.
