George Steinbrenner owning the Yankees was the worst thing that could have ever happened to baseball. The Yankees being located in the most populous and densely populated area in the country guaranteed they would have more revenue than just about every other team. Steinbrenner was equally loaded. Any time a player caught his fancy, he would go out and pay top dollar for him. When I say top dollar, I mean way too much, not just a little more than other offers, but over the top egregious salaries that no other team could come near. He inflated salaries of ball players to levels they never should have reached.
